In his small picture panels, Georg Pinteritsch (Austria, b. 1986) creates surreal worlds that combine heterogeneous visual elements from different historical and cultural contexts. Growing up in rural Austria, his experiences working as a petrol station attendant and being drafted into the Austrian army in early adulthood helped him to develop a distinct perception, which later informed his studies in painting (University of Art in Linz). Pinteritsch addresses anthropological topics and social developments through the use of highly symbolic motifs, art-historical iconography and general human topoi. He tells stories of dystopian inter-worlds, in which abstracted bodies, passages and loose objects enter into a tense relationship with their distorted surroundings and phantasmal sceneries. A contemporary equivalent to the peculiarities of alchemical depictions can be found in the work of Georg Pinteritsch. The artist’s drawings and installation interventions combine to create a complex network of ambiguous narratives. Love, violence, human relationships, our interaction with nature and the impact of technological developments on our lives are themes explored in his oeuvre, together with personal experiences, pop culture references and citations from cultural and art history. His art explores the fundamental topoi of the human condition that run as common threads through our society, connecting the present with the past. The works defy unambiguous readings and create spaces for interpretation that are open for discovery. This conglomerate of different influences can especially be felt in Georg Pinteritsch’s small-scale drawings, whose wealth of detail develops its own powerful allure.
